Hip Hop Software hasn't been around for very long...just over ten years I'd say. First it started out just as a sequencer program to sequence midi hardware with, like synths and samplers. But these days computers have advanced to a point that modern hip hop software is like an entire studio that happens to live inside your computer.
The problems that seem to crop up involving this current spurt in the popularity of music software is:
Learning Curve: Much of the current hip hop software currently on the market is not meant for a beginner. There are oodles of menus and other technicalities to slow down your learning process. Several beat making software programs look less like musical tools and more like a spreadsheet software!
Cost: Why software developers insist on such a high price for a piece of technology that has no physical dimension (other than the disks they're distributed on) amazes me to no end. One of the more "industry standard" type piece of hip hop software retails for a little over a thousand dollars...is it really wise for someone who is new to making beats to spend this much on a new hobby?
Lack of Creativity: Many people who are new to making hip hop beats have no idea how to take the creative energy that lives in their brain and translate it into the physical realm of sound. This has a lot to do with point 1, the learning curve. As a rule of thumb, the smoother the learning curve...the faster it is to get the creative juices flowing.
Piracy: Sort of the opposite of point 2...the developers get underpaid and have difficulty financing their business. As a result, bugs exist to irritate the user and frustrate them.
Fortunately, there exists a piece of software that virtually eliminates the learning curve. It also happens to be one of the cheapest pieces of software available. It also just happens to contain some of the phat test samples around...so you know your beats will be of the highest quality. Also, it just happens to come packaged with all the beat making tutorials you'd ever need to get started making beats right away.
Believe it or not, I spend a all my time looking for the best hip hop software. Now I make more beats than I know what to do with! For more information on hip hop software.
