Hip Hop Music Today

I am a DJ from Staten Island, NY but find myself performing in all the NY boroughs as well as New Jersey. When I first started in the DJ business, the music coming out in the hip hop genre was solid hits that many disc jockeys still play today. I am noticing more and more that the music coming out now only stays in the typical disc jockey's set for about 6 months to a year and then it is forgotten about. What has changed?

My opinion on what changed is just the ease of getting a record produced now. I am by far not saying it is easy to be heard on the radio but some of the songs I hear cause me to shake my head and ask why it is on the radio. A good example I feel is the "Stanky Leg" and the "Booty Dew" by the GS Boyz. When I first heard these songs I couldn't believe they made mainstream. To an even bigger surprise, I had people asking for it. I cringed everytime the song was heard from my tables but I have to give the crowd what they want to hear. Unfortunately some songs make it on to the radio and that is enough for people to request it. Both songs now are pretty much forgotten and I have not had anyone ask for it in quite awhile.

The more I her this music and others that all sound the same, the more scared I get of hip hop's future. Jay Z's song "DOA" is one of the most brilliant songs I have ever heard. He is one of the last true artists out there. I hope record labels start to think before they publish more of this garbage and fill our young society with the thoughts that this is good music.
